Move With Purpose.
Ever hear something over, and over... and o-v-e-r again??A 4-year-old responding with another "why" perhaps? Or Justin Bieber saying "Baby".
Some words and sentences turn into common phrases over time thanks to the way we use them... One of my favourite examples would be Nike's 'JUST DO IT'.
or the classic, "Jesus loves you!"
Do these phrases lose their power in repetition? I don't know... Perhaps.
Recently, I've been having mini-revelations almost daily! It feels great. They are all really obvious, but somehow, new perspective gives them fresh power.
The one I'm happy to share with you all today is Moving with Purpose. I've learnt this lesson a few times before. Letting go of the dreaded procrastination and following Nike's famous advice, JUST DO IT. Although I'm not focused on fitness specifically, I am focused on achieving goals. The goal, the path to success is getting it done rather than putting it on one of my favourite 'to do' lists and finding it months later when the piece of paper falls out the back of my diary with a half-finished to do list. There's no success in that. I am naturally far better at to do lists than just do its - why? After some self interrogation my conclusion was habit. Writing lists has become a habit, an activity that fools me in to believing that I am achieving, when in reality I am not. So this week I've been on a trial and error adventure with myself. Challenging myself, pushing myself to new limits to shake the comfort.
The excuses we make for our behaviour are often 'character defending' rather than what they should be, 'habit defending'. How often do you catch yourself saying, "Oh that's just how I am" or "I was born that way" - are you sure? Digest the words of this great man for a second and then think about that again. Nelson Mandela: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
I understand I am not talking about racism here, however, the concept applies. We learn habits, so we can unlearn them too. Stop accepting yourself at average when you have the potential to be above average. We were made for such a time as this. The world is falling apart and we are the answer. People coming together will be the answer to many of the world's problems. The issue is big. The state of the world is dark and overwhelming. I cannot do anything about it. You cannot do anything about it. However, I can do something about myself. I can do something about my bad habits. I can learn more respect. I can learn to be more mindful and compassionate. I can work at ditching bad habits and learn to move with purpose.
Everytime I've put procrastination to the side this week, and just did it, I felt great. Actually, not only did I feel great, I felt energized and then did a bunch of other things that made me feel great too! The domino effect, right?
So, Dan Wieden hit the jackpot in 1988 when he coined "Just Do It" for Nike! 20-something years later it's still ringing true to so many of us!
Nike's latest, "Be Bad until You're Good, Be Good until You're Great." is so encouraging for those of us that struggle with being bad. Personally, I am not a fan of being bad at something. I'm sure many of you will relate with this? But, as we do... we grow. Learning a new skill means pushing yourself, watering what needs to be watered until you bloom. Life brings seasons and waves of change, this is inevitable. If we can grasp the simple and timeless idea of "JUST DO IT" we will no doubt be better off.
