Make Room For The unimaginable
I don’t want my life to be explainable without God.
I want people to look at my life and know, none of it could be possible without the miraculous and wonder of God showing up in the mess, to make a way.
I want people to see the goodness and love produced that very clearly could not come from my own power. I want to live in such a way that if God doesn’t show up, I’m totally screwed.
Francis Chan’s statement along the lines of this is what helped me articulate it for myself. So this is it, welcome to another season titled: “if God doesn’t show up, I’m totally screwed”.
While driving to the beachfront this morning to meet my friend for a promenade walk, I started to hear the voice of shame, “you should be working not walking”, “it’s Monday morning, the first day of not having an official job or guaranteed income, so best you get cracking on all that freelance work”. Then shame became fear… “What about next month? What about when the freelance work runs out?”
Before I could panic, I felt the Spirit within me rise up and say: “this season is here to be enjoyed, you don’t know how long it is going to last. Don’t waste the gift of this time and flexibility. Don’t miss the beauty and colour that this season holds!”
I smiled as the voices of shame and fear were silenced by truth. “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” Matthew 6:34. The promise Jesus gave us to build our lives on.
I remembered the goal I set myself for this week: MAKE ROOM FOR THE UNIMAGINABLE.
One of my favourite scriptures is Ephesians 3:20 “Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.” (The Passion Translation)
What this verse has taught me about God’s character is that His plans for my life are infinitely more than I could ever ask for, or dream of. That His way of doing things cannot be understood or predicted. That He loves to outdo us with his power and goodness. And most importantly, that God in us, is how He chooses to accomplish it all. Partnership in us, through us, with us. Connection with Him for the wildest ride.
So this week, I am making room for the unimaginable. Choosing the partnership so that I might see infinitely more than my greatest request.
Now this sounds very inspiring, and motivational, but what does this look like when put in to practice? And after some thought, I realized it was in fact simple.
Ask Good Questions.
I think it was Albert Einstein who first said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”. This applies here. If we want the unimaginable, we need to do the unthinkable. Ask unimaginable (or just good) questions. By asking good questions with a different perspective, we open ourselves up to getting good answers with unimaginable results.
Plan (where you can) & Pray (where you can’t). I love and live by the common idea that, “failing to plan is planning to fail”. So get intentional, plan it out where you can. And then REST in prayer, knowing that we aren’t in control of all things— be intentional and surrender the outcome to the only one who holds the unimaginable in His hands.
I’ve learnt that if we want extraordinary, we have to step out of ordinary with a little faith, and be expectant for the extra to carry us forward.
That’s all from me for now, I hope this encourages and inspires you for the unimaginable available to you!
May you never lose your wonder,
